Musical Comedy/Farce

June 7-10 & July 4-5, 14-15, 20

The University of Northern Colorado School of Theatre Arts and Dance’s professional summer stock company, Little Theatre of the Rockies, presents Xanadu by Douglas Carter Beane, John Farrar, and Jeff Lynne. Directed by Shelly Gaza, Xanadu is a hilarious musical adventure about Greek goddesses and roller discos. It explores themes about following your dreams despite the limitations set for you by others.

When a person hears of Xanadu, what normally pops into their mind is the 1980 cult classic film starring Olivia Newton-John and Michael Beck. LTR is excited to bring this film to life in its adaptation of the 2009 musical spoof. Director Shelly Gaza says,

“the concept of Xanadu is tied up with a bow to embrace the campy, satirical, and spoofy feeling that is really baked into the musical.”

Xanadu follows the journey of Greek goddess, Kira, as she descends from Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California, in 1980. She’s on a quest to help the struggling artist, Sonny, succeed in the creation of the “greatest piece of artistry of all time”- the first ROLLER DISCO! But when Kira falls into forbidden love with Sonny, her jealous sisters take their chance and cause chaos all around. This show will take you back in time to 1980, reminding you of the good ole days with leg warmers, disco balls, and…a Pegasus? Xanadu features the musical score of rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, the direction of Shelly Gaza, and the performance of Bill Mitchell and UNC students. This show is sure to keep the audience moving and grooving along in their seats while giving them a good laugh and a night full of fun.
