String Audition Requirements

All applicants will submit the following application materials based on their desired degree program. For instrument-specific audition requirements, please scroll down or use these buttons to navigate to the appropriate instrument.

Application Requirements for Undergraduate Applicants

  • Complete all required application questions
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement

Application Requirements for Master of music, doctor of arts, and graduate Performance Certificate Applicants

  • Complete all required application questions
  • 3-4 letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Resumé

Note: Accompanists are not required, but the applicant may provide one.


Violin

Audition Requirements for UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES

  • A movement of a concerto with a cadenza if applicable
  • A movement of a Bach Solo Sonata or Partita
  • One solo piece of the applicant’s choice
  • Scales, arpeggios, sight-reading, and sight singing may be requested.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER OF MUSIC, DOCTOR OF ARTS, AND GRADUATE PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE

  • A movement of a Classical or Romantic concerto with cadenza if applicable
  • Two contrasting movements of a Bach Solo Sonata or Partita
  • One solo piece of applicant's choice
  • A post-1950 work of applicant's choice

Viola

Audition Requirements FOR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES

  • Three selections of contrasting styles. Suggested repertoire:
    • A movement from a Bach suite/sonata/partita
    • A movement of a sonata or concerto
    • A short 21st century work (such as Caroline Shaw's "In Manus Tuas," any solo work by Dai Fujikura, or Andrew Norman's "Sabina"), or a composition you have written for solo viola.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS for master of music

  • Two contrasting movements from a solo Bach suite/sonata/partita
  • Two movements of a sonata or concerto
  • A 21st century work (such as Caroline Shaw's "In Manus Tuas," any solo work by Dai Fujikura, or Andrew Norman's "Sabina"), or a composition you have written for solo viola.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCTOR OF ARTS AND GRADUATE PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE

  • A complete solo Bach suite/sonata/partita
  • A complete sonata or equivalent multi-movement work (such as Saariaho's "Vent Nocturne")
  • A movement of a 20th/21st century concerto
  • A 21st century work (such as Caroline Shaw's "In Manus Tuas," any solo work by Dai Fujikura, Andrew Norman's "Sabina")
  • A short composition you have written for solo viola (graphic scores, text scores, or other alternative notation systems welcome).

Double Bass

Audition Requirements for Undergraduate Degrees

  • An etude by Simandl, Kreutzer, or Hrabe
  • A solo piece (can be a movement from any standard Concerto or Sonata)
  • One orchestral excerpt
  • Two octave scales and arpessio may be requested
  • Sight-reading and sight-singing may be asked

Audition Requirements for Master of Music, Doctor of Arts, and Graduate Performance Certificate

  • One movement of solo work by Bach
  • Two contrasting movements from a concerto
  • Two standard orchestral excerpts

Classical Guitar

Audition Requirements for Undergraduate Degrees

  • One standard study piece or etude by Sor, Aguado, Giuliani, Carcassi, Coste, Villa-Lobos, or Brouwer
  • Two pieces of applicant’s choice, preferably of contrasting historical periods
  • One two-octave major scale and the relative melodic minor of applicant’s choice
  • Sight-reading and sight-singing may be asked.

Audition Requirements for Master of Music, DOCTor of arts, and Graduate Performance Certificate

  • A substantial movement by J.S. Bach
  • Two substantial pieces of the applicant’s choice

Harp

Audition Requirements for all degrees

  • Two contrasting pieces, one of which may include a movement from a standard harp concerto by Ravel, Debussy, Mozart, Tedesco, Gliere, etc. 
  • A cadenza from orchestral literature
