    Application Requirements:

    Audition Requirements:

    • Major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales in 3 different keys of your choice.
    • Play the bass line from one of your favorite songs (any current style- rock, pop, R&B, funk, etc.). Play this with the original recording*; you may be asked to play parts of it on your own. This must be memorized.
    • Sight reading skills will be assessed.
    • Aural skills: Applicant's ability to match pitch vocally and to distinguish basic chord structures (i.e. major, minor, diminished and augmented triads, in all inversions) will be assessed.

    • *Please bring all required recordings of backing tracks with you. You may use a CD or a phone/tablet with a mini-plug output.

    Additional Requirements:
    • All students auditioning will also prepare one of the two options below:
      1. For students intending to focus on classical music:
        • Perform a “classical” solo piece, for example something from “J.S. Bach For Bass” (published by Mel Bay) or “Bach Cello Suites for Electric Bass” (published by Hal Leonard). Does not need to be memorized.
      2. For students intending to focus on jazz music within the BA, BM-Business, BM-composition, or BME degree programs:
        • Perform a jazz etude, for example something from “Jazz Conception” by Jim Snidero or “Jazz and Funk Etudes” by Bob Mintzer. Does not need to be memorized.
        • Play the melody (head), a walking bass line, and an improvised solo on a blues or a jazz standard tune (medium tempo swing). Play this with a recorded background track that you provide. Does not need to be memorized.

    • Two pieces or movements of works from contrasting style periods. If movements of work are chosen, they must come from separate compositions. Applicant’s choices should demonstrate both lyrical and “technical” playing abilities.

    • Perform an originally improvised scat solo by a classical or contemporary jazz vocalist. Bring the original recording on CD or digital device to use as your accompaniment.

      • Contemporary examples: Dianne Reeved, Nancy King, Kuty Elling, Bobby McFerrin
    • Sing the melody of two jazz tunes in contrasting styles/tempos (swing, ballad, latin, blues) and prepare to improvise over the form of at least one selection. Please bring another lead sheet or backing track (using a CD or digital device) in your preferred key for each selection.
    • You will be played a series of 4-note and 5-note patterns on the piano and asked to reproduce each pattern using the neutral syllable of your choice (lah, dah, or doo).
    • You will be led through a series of vocal exercises to demonstrate your range, tone quality, control and flexibility.

    • Percussion students auditioning for the jazz studies program must perform the following at the scheduled audition:
      • A rudimental snare drum solo
      • A concert snare drum solo
      • A mallet piece (either two mallet or four)

    • Jazz Drum Set Requirements:
      1. Demonstrate knowledge of various styles including the following:
        • A slow jazz ballad with brushes
        • Medium swing
        • Up-tempo swing
        • Bossa Nova
        • Jazz samba
        • 16th note funk feel
        • 8th note rock feel
        • Jazz waltz
      2. Demonstrate improvisational ability by playing a 12-bar blues in the following manner:

    • Jazz studies applicants are encouraged to submit a recording which demonstrates his or her ability to play with a jazz ensemble (either big band, small group, or both).

      • Demonstrate different styles and original compositions if applicable.
    • Ensemble playing:
      • Play a traditional bluegrass tune and/or song with faculty ensemble.
        • Be expected to kick off a tune, take a solo, and play under a solo or singing; i.e. fills, chopping, and padding.
    • Reading and Aural Skills:
      • Sight read a tune, then play backing with chords from a chart.
      • Repeat short phrases back to demonstrate ability to learn by ear.

    Audition Requirements:

    • Solo playing:
      • Perform at least one fiddle tune or other instrumental piece in a bluegrass style.
    • Ensemble playing:
      • Demonstrate the basic abilities required when playing guitar in a bluegrass band.
        • Specifically:
          • Ability to kick off a song instrumentally
          • Follow a kick off
          • Rhythm playing.
    • Reading and Aural Skills:
      • Sight read a tune, then play backing with chords from a chart (if able).
      • Repeat short phrases back to demonstrate ability to learn by ear.

    Audition Requirements:

    • Perform at least two contrasting bluegrass tunes and/or songs with faculty ensemble. Demonstrate vocal abilities with lead or backup singing if able.
    • Play a selection of scales (major and minor).
    • Reading and Aural Skills:
      • Sight read a tune, then play backing with chords from a chart.
      • Repeat short phrases back to demonstrate ability to learn by ear.
