Jason Byrnes is Professor of Music, Tuba and Music Education, at the University of Northern Colorado. In addition to teaching in the applied tuba and music education areas, he is director of the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, and performs with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rough Riders Dixieland Band, and the 101st Army Band. Dr. Byrnes is a Willson Performing Artist.
As a winner of numerous concerto competitions, Dr. Byrnes is in demand as a soloist and clinician. Recent performances include the Montreux International Jazz Festival, the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference, the 2012 International Tuba-Euphonium Conference, and universities across the U.S. Dr. Byrnes' solo tuba CD, Burning Tuba was positively reviewed in ITEA Journal, naming Byrnes as a "soon-to-be household name."
Before coming to UNC, Dr. Byrnes taught at the State University of New York-Potsdam, Murray State University, and in the public schools of Indianapolis. Dr. Byrnes earned Music Education and Performance degrees from Tennessee Technological University and Pennsylvania State University. His doctorate was earned at Indiana University. His teachers include R. Winston Morris, Daniel Perantoni, and Marty Erickson.
