Sara Heimbecker, musicologist and cellist, is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Illinois. She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of Northern Colorado where she was recognized as an outstanding scholar and performer. After receiving a Fulbright Scholarship, Sara researched the music of Hans Rott, a contemporary of Gustav Mahler’s, in Vienna, Austria.

Ms. Heimbecker is a specialist in twentieth-century American music, popular and rock music topics, and has a particular interest in the study of musical semiotics. She has presented papers at a number of local and national conferences, most recently for the Society for American Music national conference. She has spoken on musicology pedagogy and the use of on-line course management systems at the American Musicological Society national conference. Her article, “HPSCHD, Gesamtkunstwerk, and Utopia” on John Cage’s 1969 piece HPSCHD was recently published in the journal American Music.

She is co-director with Dr. Paul Elwood of the Open Space New Music Festival, and co-sponsor of the student group “Beyond the Standard Repertoire” with Dr. Ken Singleton.

She is an active performer with the period-instrument Baroque trio, The Grand Canonical Ensemble, with flautist Tamara Meredith and UNC harpsichord professor, Debra Throgmorton.
