Guidelines for Presentations: Romantic Period

Suggested textbooks: Leon Plantinga, Romantic Music; Alfred Einstein, Music in the Romantic Era.

  • Romanticism and the art song
    • Discuss the literary and artistic aspects of Romanticism
    • The rise of the German Lied
    • The relationship between poetry, melody, and accompaniment
    • The song cycle
    • The song with orchestral accompaniment
    • Include discussion of the following works by principal composers in terms of typical structure, style (there will not be time to listen to all of them -- bring scores to look at; maybe play short selections):
