Vocal Study at UNC
The University of Northern Colorado School of Music offers degree programs designed to develop your talents and abilities to their fullest. While a student at UNC, you will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in instrumental performance and education, music theory and composition, and music history and literature -- a level of preparation that can open the door to challenging career opportunities for you in today's competitive job market.
Whether you choose a performance-oriented career or one centered on education, you will find outstanding faculty who will help you as you prepare to join the ranks of distinguished UNC performers and educators who have found ready acceptance in their professions.
Private Study
Central to the entire curriculum at UNC is the special relationship developed between you and your teacher during weekly lessons. These sessions serve as the basis for thoughtful evaluation of your present needs and a gradual formation of your future goals. As you study and perform with fine faculty and student musicians in many settings, you will develop mutual respect, understanding and friendships -- the types of bonds that are so rewarding within a community of artists.
Performance Opportunities
UNC sponsors more than 50 ensembles, a number of which have received national acclaim. Vocal performing organizations include:
- Concert Choir, a highly select group that performs a wide range of choral literature from the classics to music of contemporary composers;
- Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs, like-voice choirs that provide the opportunity for participation in the great tradition of men’s and women’s ensemble singing;
- Juventus, a select group of 16-20 singers that performs a variety of choral chamber works
- University Singers, 25 singers who perform an extremely varied repertoire ranging from Renaissance motets to contemporary works
- Vocal Jazz Ensembles, groups of 6-25 students that sing traditional and contemporary vocal jazz arrangements;
UNC’s Opera Theatre and Musical Theatre
present a variety of productions each semester:
Mainstage Productions of at least two operas and two musicals are presented annually. These fully staged and costumed productions are accompanied by one of the University instrumental ensembles. Recent productions have included A Chorus Line, Cosi Fan Tutte, Evita, The Fantasticks, H.M.S. Pinafore, Madame Butterfly, Show Boat and La Traviata.
- Opera Workshop presents opera scenes and chamber operas twice each year. These fully-staged and costumed productions provide a realistic training environment for student performers and directors.
- The Opera-in-Education Program presents revues and one-act productions for schools and civic organizations throughout the state.
