The UNC Recording Studio

Completed in January 1996, The UNC Recording Studio is one of the finest studios in the region. The studio was designed by national award-winning acoustician Russ Berger and was funded by grants from the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and the National Endowment for the Arts.

With a full complement of top-of-the-line equipment and an experienced staff, the UNC Recording Studio offers musicians a valuable resource for preserving their music. The facility includes a large drum booth, a vocal isolation booth, and a spacious main area all set on separate foundations, suspended on springs and supported by rubber blocks to maintain complete acoustic isolation. The recording area contains a Yamaha C-7 Piano, a comprehensive collection of AKG, Beyer, CAD and Neumann microphones, and a wide selection of outboard processing. Other musical resources include Kurzweil and Roland synthesizers as well as video-synchronizing capabilities. The studio can record up to 40 tracks and master to DAT or recordable CD. We also offer limited-run real-time cassette duplication.

Groups ranging from classical to jazz, rock to music theatre and ethnic styles have utilized the facility for various projects. Some of the groups and individuals that have taken advantage of the UNC Recording Studio since it opened include D'Fusion, World Separation, the Pearl Street Jazz Band, David Seering, James Ball, Isabelle Haze, jazz saxophonist Dave Liebman, the Ambrosian Consort, and former Yes and Moody Blues keyboardist Patrick Moraz. As part of the UNC School of Music, the studio also provides recording facilities to groups such as the nationally acclaimed UNC Jazz Program and many others. The studio has even aided in such non-musical projects as audio work for police agencies and clarifying recordings from surveillance and interrogations.

Perhaps one of the most alluring facets of the UNC Recording Studio is the low cost. The reasonable rate of $60.00 an hour includes the services of the studio's expert staff. UNC students may use the recording studio at a discounted rate of $35.00 an hour with a faculty sponsor and $50.00 an hour without a faculty sponsor. Tape prices are not included in these rates.
