Grammy winning hornist Marian Hesse is Associate Professor of Horn at the University of Northern Colorado. As a member of the renowned Chestnut Brass Company for twenty-two seasons, Ms. Hesse is an accomplished performer on historical instruments from the Renaissance, early 19th century and the Civil War eras. In addition to the horn, she plays alto sacbut, natural horn, alto saxhorn and the quinticlave (a rare 19th century keyed instrument). With the Chestnut Brass, and as a soloist, she has performed chamber music recitals and solos in 49 states. As a recording artist, Ms. Hesse has made more than eighteen recordings. These range from performances on early brasses to recent works for brass quintet - Ms. Hesse is featured horn soloist in the Grammy award winning Chestnut Brass Company recording of Variations on a Joke by Peter Schickele (Newport  Classic -Hornsmoke). In addition, she appears on the Mozart Orchestra recording of the oboe concertos of William Herschel (Newport Classic), the Philadelphia Virtuosi recordings of the Music of George Antheil and Howard Hanson (Naxos), as well as the original soundtrack recording of the Ken Burns Civil War television program (Elektra).

In her role as an educator, Ms. Hesse has given lectures and master classes at leading educational institutions nationwide including the Chautauqua Institute, Interlochen, the Juilliard School of Music, University of North Texas, and the University of Wisconsin. Ms. Hesse has served on the horn jury for the Cheju (Korea) International Brass Competition in 2000, 2002 and 2006.  Ms. Hesse has served on the jury for the International Horn Competition of America and is on the Board of that organization as well as the board of the American Hunting Horn Society.  Ms. Hesse previously taught at Rowan University, LaSalle University and the University of Kansas.

Ms. Hesse performs internationally with the Chestnut Brass Company and performs as principal horn with the Lafayette Pro Musica (CO),the Boulder Bach Festival (CO), and the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra (PA). She frequently appears as extra or substitute hornist with the Colorado Symphony and performs often with the Boulder Brass and Denver Brass. She has performed in the Cayman Islands, Korea, Winterfest in Brazil, the Montreal International Music Camp, Mexico, Canada, Germany and Hungary.

A graduate of the Yale School of Music, Ms. Hesse was awarded the Francis Louis Kirchoff Tapp chamber music award. With the Chestnut Brass Company, Ms. Hesse has been a finalist in the noted Naumburg Chamber Music competition and  a semi-finalist in the Erwin Bodky Early Music Competition.

This Grammy award winning release features all of the brass chamber music of Peter Schickele, including Brass Calendar which was commissioned by the Chestnut Brass Company. Peter Schickele narrates for the Hornsmoke selection, and is pianist on Piano Concerto #2, 'Ole. Hornist Marian Hesse is highlighted on the Mozart-inspired Variations on a Joke. The remaining work on the recording is A Little Mosey Music.

Political campaign songs and politically oriented brass band music are the focus of this recording including the Veto Galop, General Harrison's Log Cabin March, and Quickstep, and the mournful Lincoln Funeral March. Performed on historical brass band instruments.
