The 2009 UNC Orff Schulwerk Training Program
June 15-26, 2009

Level One Instructor: Liz Keefe
(4 Credit Hours for Level One)

Level Two Instructors: Dr. David Connors & Matt McCoy
(4 Credit Hours for Level Two)

Movement Instructors: Dr. David Connors & Matt McCoy

Recorder Instructor: Matt McCoy

The workshop follows a spiraled approach where introductory experiences move into and through progressively more sophisticated instructional strategies. Musical composition and improvisation are focused on placing children’s learning needs in the forefront. This Institute is offered as Levels I & II.

Classes will run from 9:00 am until approximately 5:00 pm each day (no Saturday or Sunday classes). Please call Dr. Robert Al Harding at (970) 351-2673 for further information.

Required Materials for Orff Schulwerk Training Program
Level I:
• Music for Children, Vol. I, Orff/Keetman, Murray Edition, (Schott)
• Play, Sing and Dance: An Introduction to Orff Schulwerk, Doug Goodkin, (Schott)
• Soprano Recorder

You will also need acess to books of children’s poetry and nursery rhymes. Please wear comfortable clothes as we will be sitting on the floor and doing a lot of movement.

Level II:
• Music for Children, Vols. II & IV, Murray Edition (Schott)
• Soprano and Alto Recorders
• Three-Ring Binder
• Manuscript Paper

All required materials (except binders and manuscript paper) will be available onsite through a representative of West Music.

Workshop costs: 4 credit hours $995.00

The American Orff Schulwerk Association (AOSA) requires that we have minimum of 15 participants for Level One and a minimum of 8 participants for for Level Two. If those levels are not achieved, we will have to cancel the class. Please make sure we have your reservation or registration by June 1, 2009

Art & Design Workshops SUMMER 2008

As part of one of the region’s oldest and most-respected visual arts programs, summer workshops are taught by a diverse group of highly skilled teachers recognized for their art, instructional expertise and research.

Study artistic aspects of our heritage, culture, visual communications and personal expression, as well as the arts of other cultures and civilizations. Produce art in a variety of media and understand various art forms as they relate to personal expression and professional application.

THEA 508 - WORKSHOP FOR SECONDARY DRAMA TEACHERS
Includes all three sessions taught by UNC Faculty Tom McNally, John Leonard, and Dr. Mary Schuttler

Becoming The Actor’s Director
Tom McNally
This section will acquaint teachers with six steps in becoming a successful director/acting coach. Content includes essential action, orchestration, character, guideposts, and concept/comedy.

No Theatre Teacher Left Behind: Teaching Strategies, Curriculum and Advocacy
Dr. Mary Schuttler
This section will update teachers on current theatre advocacy efforts, effective curriculum and successful teaching strategies. It will provide techniques to assist drama teachers in enhancing their theatre curriculum and building a strong theatre program.

Techniques on Staging/Choreographing Musical Theatre Songs and Dances
John Leonard
This section will place emphasis on the staging and choreography of musical theatre songs (solos, duets, small ensembles, large choruses) and deal with various challenges of choreographing the musical number. Musical Theatre dance vocabulary will be explored in depth.
