Alisa Hickox earned her Master of Music in music theory and Master of Music in harp performance from Michigan State University, and her Bachelor of Music in harp performance from UNC. She taught freshman and sophomore theory courses and freshman aural skills courses for two years as a teaching assistant during her time at MSU; in addition, she tutored freshman students in both theory and aural skills. She currently teaches aural skills at UNC.
Before moving back to Colorado, she maintained an active performing career in Michigan as a soloist and as principal harp of several regional college orchestras, including Michigan State symphony orchestra and wind symphony, Alma College orchestra, and Albion College orchestra. Her research interests include the incorporation of problem-based learning into theory pedagogy as well as period performance practice of early 19th century harp repertoire.
