2021 Rocky Mountain Music Scholars Conference
The University of Northern Colorado is please to announce that we will be hosting a virtual conference in 2021.
The annual Rocky Mountain Music Scholars Conference is a joint meeting of the Rocky Mountain Chapters of the American Musicological Society and the Society for Music Theory, and the Southwest Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology.
This conference will consist of "live" presentations during the sessions. That said, presenters have also been given an option of creating a video of their presentation and participating in live Q&A. We are planning coffee breaks as well as a reception in the hopes of replicating as closely as possible the experience of an in-person conference and providing for times to connect with each other. We will also be recording all the sessions, and those recordings will be made available to conference attendees on the presentation platform.
We will be using Canvas as our conference presentation platform, and only those who are registered will have access. Once you have registered, you will be provided with instructions for joining and logging into the Canvas shell. These will be sent via email in the near future by the logistics coordinator for the conference.
Conference Registration
Registration fees are as follows: Professional registration - $20; Student registration - $0. When you enter the registration portal, you will also be asked if you wish to support the student awards. Each year we provide a monetary award for the best student paper in each society: AMS, SEM, and SMT. If you wish to lend your financial support to these awards, you may click yes, select the society award you wish to support, and then you will be able to choose an amount. This is not required for registration, purely voluntary support.
Since we were forced to cancel the 2020 Rocky Mountain Scholar's Conference due to COVID restrictions, we offered to provide a downloadable version of the papers that were accepted for presentation, should the scholars wish to do so. You can find those here on the RMSMT website.

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the AMS is pleased to announce a call for papers for the Annual Meeting of the chapter on April 9–10, 2021. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic, the conference will be held virtually, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, Colorado. The conference is part of the Rocky Mountain Music Scholars Conference, held jointly with the Southwest Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory.
The Program Committee invites proposals from scholars and students for individual papers (20 minutes and 10-minute discussion), sessions of 3–4 papers on a single topic, or roundtable discussions on musicological topics. For individual papers, please submit a paper title and abstract of 250 words or less attached to an email that provides the author’s name and institutional affiliation (if applicable). The name(s) or affiliation(s) of anyone involved in the presentation should not appear in the title or abstract. Conference papers will be chosen by the selection committee through a blind review process.
According to chapter bylaws any paper submitted by an undergraduate or a master’s student must be accompanied by a faculty letter of endorsement (not submitted to the review committee with the abstract). A committee will select a student for the best student paper prize, to be awarded at the end of the conference.

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the SEMSW is pleased to announce a call for papers for the Virtual Annual Meeting of the chapter on April 9–10, 2021, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, Colorado. The conference will take place as part of the Rocky Mountain Music Scholars Conference, held jointly with the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Musicological Society, Southwest Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society for Music Theory.
The Southwest Chapter includes Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. The Program Committee invites proposals from Ethnomusicologists, Anthropologists, music scholars from all disciplines, and music students for individual papers (20 minutes and 10-minute discussion), panels of 3–4 papers on a single topic, or roundtable discussions on ethnomusicological topics.

The Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory is pleased to announce a call for papers for the Annual Meeting of the society on April 9–10, 2021. The conference will be held online, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. The conference will be held jointly with the Southwest Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEMSW) and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Musicological Society (AMS-RMC). The keynote address will be announced in the conference program.
The Program Committee invites proposals from scholars and students for individual papers (20 minutes in length, with 10 minutes for discussion). Proposals should be sent electronically (as pdfs attached to an email) to acting society president, Andrew Gades according to the instructions below. The name(s) or affiliation(s) of anyone involved in the presentation must not appear in the title or abstract.
Instructions for proposal preparation and submission
Submissions should comprise three elements: (1) a proposal in pdf format; (2) a second pdf with an abstract; and (3) identification information in the body of the email.
- Your proposal should consist of no more than 500 words, including any footnotes or endnotes. (One mathematical equation may be counted as one word). If desired, a maximum of four additional pages of supplementary materials may be appended (such as musical examples, diagrams, and selected bibliography); these pages will not be counted within the 500-word limit. The proposal should include the title of the paper but must exclude the author’s name and any other identifying information. Any references to the author’s own work must occur in the third person (Note: also ensure that any self-identification is removed from the file name and the Document “Properties” field). The entire proposal with supplementary materials should be gathered into a single pdf.
- Your abstract should consist of no more than 250 words, and should be written in a manner suitable for publication in the conference program should your proposal be accepted. (All of the same considerations regarding non-disclosure of the author’s identity must be applied). The abstract should be in a separate pdf from the proposal.
- In the body of the email to which the abstract and proposal are attached, please include the following identificatory information: title of the proposal, author’s name, author’s address, author’s institutional affiliation (or independent scholar/student status), author’s email address, and any technical or audio-visual requirements. If you are a student and wish to be considered for the Best Student Paper Award (see below), please state that in the body of the email as well.
Labeling your electronic documents
For both abstract and proposal, please include the title of the proposal in the document
itself (above the main body of text).
For both abstract and proposal, please name the file with a short form of your title,
the word “abstract” or “proposal,” and RMSMT2020. For example: Hexachordal_Combinatoriality_in_The_Chronic_RMSMT2021_Abstract.pdf
For the subject line of your email submission, please write “RMSMT2020 Submission,”
(with no space between RMSMT and 2020).
Please note that only complete submissions will be considered, and that submission

Best Student Paper Award
Students who wish to be considered for the Best Student Paper Award (BSPA) must declare their interest in the body of the proposal email. The student will then be additionally required to submit an electronic copy of the paper itself—the version to be read at the conference (i.e., not an entire dissertation chapter)—along with any tables, figures, or musical examples by Friday, March 26, 2021 to Andrew Gades.
