University of Northern Colorado Home

Named a Colorado Program of Excellence by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, the School of Theatre Arts and Dance provides pre-professional training for students who plan to pursue careers in professional theatre, or as teachers of theatre arts. The School actively cultivates an appreciation and understanding of theatre as a part of American society and culture, and as a vehicle for the enrichment of life.

In the Spotlight

The Director of the School of Theatre Arts and Dance is an award-winning actor, a LORT director and widely-produced playwright.

The Artistic Director of the Little Theatre of the Rockies and Head of the Acting Program won the National Teacher of the Year Award, the Colorado Higher Education Teacher of the Year Award, and was nominated for a Denver Drama Critics Award.

  • UNC's Theatre Education specialist, a national-award-winning high school drama director, has served as the President of the National Educational Theatre Association and is a member of the EDTA Hall of Fame.
  • UNC's Director of Musical Theatre is a New York-trained professional who has brought Broadway level work to northern Colorado.
  • UNC students fare exceedingly well in regional/national auditions. Students from UNC have competed at the Kennedy Center in the American College Theatre Festival Finals. UNC students and faculty have been honored frequently by ACTF for acting, directing and designing.
  • The quality and quantity of UNC Theatre Arts productions is unparalleled in college/university programs in the Rocky Mountain Region.
  • The UNC theatre faculty is highly visible at state, regional and national conventions as presenters, clinicians and keynote speakers.
  • All UNC faculty are members of Actors Equity, USITT, SSD&C, USA, DGA and/or other professional theatre organizations.
  • The School has an academic articulation agreement with The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts
  • Each year a number of guest artists and industry professionals are brought to campus to work directly with students.
  • Each year senior performance majors showcase their talents for industry professionals in New York City and Los Angeles.
