UNC Opera Theatre alum Yamuna Meleth stars as Annu, the sister of Mukhtar Mai, in Opera Ithaca’s new production Thumbprint – a contemporary opera inspired by the true story and heroic fight of Mukhtar Mai, the first female victim of gang rape to bring her male attackers to justice in Pakistan. In lieu of a financial settlement, Mai requested the construction of schools for girls, that through education they may be freed of the humiliation of signing their name only with their thumbprint. UNC Professor of Saxophone Andrew Dahlke is featured on a recording of a piece chosen as a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The work is titled The Mechanics: Six From the Shop Floor, composed by CU-Boulder Professor Carter Pann. The Pulitzer Prize in Music is based off of the recording of the work rather than the written score. Pann’s piece was composed for the Capitol Quartet, a saxophone quartet in which Dahlke was a member through October 2014. [READ FULL POST]
The UNC School of Music has announced the winners of the first annual Spark Initiative. Students Braeden Ayres and Trevor Lovell will receive $1,500 from the Monfort College of Business to continue development of a mobile and web-based app that teaches students rhythmic concepts. [READ FULL POST]
