Yamuna Meleth, UNC School of Music Alum

UNC Opera Theatre alum Yamuna Meleth stars as Annu, the sister of Mukhtar Mai, in Opera Ithaca’s new production Thumbprint – a contemporary opera inspired by the true story and heroic fight of Mukhtar Mai, the first female victim of gang rape to bring her male attackers to justice in Pakistan. In lieu of a financial settlement, Mai requested the construction of schools for girls, that through education they may be freed of the humiliation of signing their name only with their thumbprint. Andrew Dahlke, School of Music Faculty

UNC Professor of Saxophone Andrew Dahlke is featured on a recording of a piece chosen as a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The work is titled The Mechanics: Six From the Shop Floor, composed by CU-Boulder Professor Carter Pann. The Pulitzer Prize in Music is based off of the recording of the work rather than the written score. Pann’s piece was composed for the Capitol Quartet, a saxophone quartet in which Dahlke was a member through October 2014. [READ FULL POST]

Braeden Ayres & Trevor Lovell, Spark Initiative
