Art & Design Student Wins National Graphic Design Award
UNC Graphic Design student Amarie Stocker won the national 2017 Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) Student Design Award! Out of hundreds of entries all over the USA, fewer than 50 projects were chosen as winners. All the winners are showcased on the Graphic Design USA website for the next year.

A New Light: Andrew Bablo & Pat Milbery
The lobby of Crabbe Hall, which houses our Oak Room Gallery and studios, served as a blank slate for duo Andrew Bablo and Pat Milbery to tackle this August. The east coast/west coast collaboration between Andrew Bablo and Pat Milbery results in an unprecedented revitalization of Crabbe Hall lobby.

Echo: Dylan Gebbia-Richards
Dylan Gebbia-Richards creates an explosive symphony of vivid colors by layering melted wax onto the surface of his work. While each mark begins as a tiny speck, the gradual buildup of these small gestures culminates in a sensory experience of unparalleled proportion. The artist’s innovative process awakens an alternate state of consciousness that stimulates hearing colors and seeing sounds, also known as chromesthesia.

Theatre & Dance Professors and Alum Present Research in South Africa
In May, Professors Dr. Mary Schuttler and Gillian McNally presented at the International Theatre for Young Audiences Research Network. Dr. Schuttler presented a paper on the impact of UNC’s 2016 production of The Transition of Doodle Pequeño. Gillian McNally facilitated a panel discussion on LGBTQ TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences). In this panel, she also shared the impact of The Transition of Doodle Pequeño on the UNC students, the children in the audience and the elementary school’s reactions to this controversial production. Adding to both of these panels was UNC Alumnae Sam Provenzano.

All Angles Orchestra Releases Album and Tours Midwest
The All Angles Orchestra, formed at UNC and led by composer Mike Conrad, recently released their new album, New Angle. The group, which specializes in new and original music for their unique mixed instrumentation, is currently performing across the Midwest on a 7-city tour.

Naomi Gold Wins National Lighting Design Award
Naomi Gold, a UNC Design & Technology major studying lighting design, recently won the USA National 2nd Place Barbizon Award for Theatrical Excellence in Lighting Design at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Nationals for her lighting design in UNC’s Fall 2016 production of Spring Awakening (pictured above). Congrats to Naomi on this achievement!
