Percussion Audition Requirements

All applicants will submit the following application materials based on their desired degree program. For instrument-specific audition requirements, please scroll down.

Application Requirements for Undergraduate Applicants

  • Complete all required application questions
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement

Application Requirements for Master of music, doctor of arts, and graduate Performance Certificate Applicants

  • Complete all required application questions
  • 3-4 letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Resumé

Note: Accompanists are not required, but the applicant may provide one.


Percussion

Audition Requirements for UNdergraduate Degrees

  • Snare drum
    • Concert solo (choose one etude from the following, or equivalent)
      • Anthony Cirone: Portraits in Rhythm
      • Jacques Delecluse: Douze Etudes
      • Mitchell Peters: Advanced Snare Drum Studies
    • Rudimental solo (choose one etude from the following, or equivalent)
      • Charles Wilcoxon: Modern Rudimental Swing Solos
      • John Pratt: 14 Modern Contest Solos
      • Joe Tompkins: French Rudimental Etudes, vol. 1 or 2
  • Two-mallet marimba or xylophone (choose one of the following, or equivalent)
    • Xylophone rag by George Hamilton Green, Harry Breuer
    • Gigue or Presto from Partitas for Solo Violin or Cello Suites by J.S. Bach
    • Gene Koshinski: Solo from his collection Two
  • Four-mallet marimba
    • Choose a four-mallet solo that allows you to show your current technical and musical ability.
  • Timpani (choose one etude from the following, or equivalent)
    • Elliott Carter: Eight Pieces for Solo Timpani
    • Vic Firth: Solo Timpanist
    • Jacques Delecluse: 30 etudes
    • Richard Hochrainer: Etudes for Timpani

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR Master of Music

  • Snare Drum
    • Concert solo of your choice showing an advanced technical and musical level.
    • Rudimental solo of your choice showing an advanced technical and musical level.
    • Three (3) standard orchestral excerpts
  • Two mallets
    • Two mallet solo on marimba or xylophone demonstrating an advanced technical of musical level.
    • Three (3) standard orchestral xylophone excerpts.
  • Four mallets
    • Marimba or vibraphone solo at an advanced technical or musical level.
  • Timpani
    • Solo demonstrating an advanced understanding of technical and tuning abilities
    • Three (3) standard orchestral timpani excerpts
  • Multiple percussion
    • At least 5 minutes of a multiple percussion solo of your choice uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, etc.
    • Please email video link to michael.truesdell@unco.edu before your audition.
  • World music
    • Optional demonstration of world-music knowledge and skills

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCTOR OF ARTS AND GRADUATE PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE

  • Snare drum
    • Solos in concert and rudimental styles demonstrating a high level of technical and musical understanding.
    • Five (5) standard orchestral snare drum excerpts
  • Two mallets
    • Two-mallet solo(s) demonstrating a professional technical and musical understanding.
    • Five (5) standard excerpts for mallets (xylophone or glockenspiel)
  • Four mallets
    • Contemporary concerto, solo on marimba or vibraphone demonstrating a high level of technical and musical understanding.
  • Timpani
    • Solo piece showing professional-level understanding of tuning and technique.
    • Standard orchestral timpani excerpts from at least five (5) separate works
  • Multiple percussion
    • At least 5 minutes of a multiple percussion solo of your choice uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, etc.
    • Please email video link to michael.truesdell@unco.edu before audition.
  • Chamber Music
    • Optional - links can be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, etc. and emailed to michael.truesdell@unco.edu before audition.
  • World music
    • Optional - Self-arranged piece demonstrating style(s)/techniques of non-western music, possibly including song. Could be from Africa, Cuba, Brazil, Venezuela, Middle East, or many other places.
