About The Program

The Acting program at UNC is a rigorous, pre-professional training program designed to prepare talented young actors for careers in theatre, film, and television. 

In addition to concentrated training in acting, voice, and movement, students are also presented with numerous performance opportunities including main-stage plays and musicals, one-acts, dance concerts, improv and sketch comedy troupes, and the Little Theatre of the Rockies professional summer stock theatre company. 

  • Degree Overview

    Undergraduate Studies

    Our BFA Acting degree provides sequential training in acting, voice and speech, and movement over four years. The freshman year is a foundational year in which students explore imagination and are introduced to basic skills such as working from self and learning to play objectives. 

    In the sophomore year these skills are deepened through more advanced scene work, and through movement classes that emphasize the physical life of characters.  

    In the junior year the foundational work of students’ first two years is applied to increasingly challenging styles of acting that include the plays of Anton Chekhov, G.B. Shaw and contemporary playwrights such as Dominique Morrisseau.   

    The senior year provides a bridge from training to the acting profession with classes on auditioning professionally, the acting business and acting on camera. The capstone course, Acting Senior Showcase, connects students directly with the entertainment industry through master classes with studio executives, talent managers, and working actors. The course culminates with students’ performances, which are viewed by agents and casting directors.

    Little Theatre of the Rockies

    UNC's Little Theatre of the Rockies is the oldest professional summer stock theatre west of the Mississippi and the oldest professional theatre company in Colorado.

    The School of Theatre Arts and Dance produces two industry showcase presentations to assist our senior Acting and Musical Theatre students with their transitions into the professional world.

  • Curriculum 

    Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting

    In addition to completing the Liberal Arts Curricululm requirements, students will have studies in acting, voice & speech, playscript analysis, stage movement, theatre improvisation, theatre history, stage make-up, advanced acting styles and acting for the camera. Students will have many opportunities both inside and outside the classroom to perform for classmates and larger audiences.

  • Auditions and  Scholarships

    Auditions

    In addition to submitting an application in the UNC Application Portal, prospective students should prepare contrasting monologues to perform either in person or video.

    Scholarships

    The College of Performing and Visual Arts awards over $1.8 million in scholarships annually to undergraduate and graduate students in the arts.
