Professional/Academic Experience

Heidi Mendenhall is a proud alum of the University of Northern Colorado, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. After UNC, she moved to Rochester, New York, earning her Master of Music degree in clarinet performance from the Eastman School of Music. Heidi completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts back in Colorado, at the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2007. Her principal teachers include Thomas Masse, Bil Jackson, Ken Grant, and Daniel Silver.

Heidi has been a member of the Opera Colorado orchestra in Denver since 2012. She also performs often with the Colorado Ballet and Boulder Philharmonic, as well as many other orchestras along the Front Range.

Prior to joining Opera Colorado, Heidi lived a few years in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, performing in a series of mountain town recitals, from Aspen, where she had previously attended the Aspen Music Festival, to Steamboat and Estes Park. While in Steamboat Springs, she was a member of the Emerald City Opera, Steamboat Symphony, and performed with the Strings in the Mountains Festival. Before Steamboat, Heidi was also a member of the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra and served as principal clarinet of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra.

Since moving back to the Boulder area, Heidi has a large private teaching studio and enjoys leading master classes, conducting clarinet choirs, and serving as a sectional coach for a few local high schools. Eager to combine her passion for teaching and love of UNC, Heidi is thrilled to join the clarinet studio as adjunct professor of clarinet.

Heidi lives with her husband and two sons in Broomfield, spending her free time in the yoga studio or out in the garden.
