Music Composition Audition Requirements

All applicants will submit the following application materials based on their desired degree program. For specific audition requirements, please scroll down or use these buttons to navigate to the appropriate area.

Application Requirements for Undergraduate Applicants

Undergraduate classical and jazz composition applicants will apply for their primary instrument or voice studio. Use buttons below to navigate to the appropriate page.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • Complete all Graduate School Application Requirements for your degree program and the UNC Application
  • After submitting your application, upload and complete the following School of Music Checklist Items in your Graduate School Admissions Portal:
    • School of Music Form - Includes scheduling a live audition or a synchronous interview with video audition, uploading audition videos (if applicable), musical experience, and past teachers.
    • Resume - a complete listing of your performing and work experience. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • Statement of Goals - a brief statement about your career aspirations. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • Assistantship Letter of Experience (optional but strongly recommended) - a brief statement about your teaching or professional experience as it relates to music. Please upload a .pdf document.
Additional Application Requirements for Master of Music
  • Upload to the admission portal a Sample of Academic Writing in the form of a music history paper or a theoretical analysis
  • Upload to the admission portal three representative scores and upload to the application their corresponding recordings; while MIDI recordings are accepted live recordings are preferred.
Additional Application Requirements for Doctor of Arts
  • Upload to the admission portal a sample of your academic writing in the form of a paper written for a music history or theory class. Applicants for the DA in composition may submit their Master of Music thesis, if completed and in something other than score form (a theory study/analysis or musicological exploration).
  • Upload to the admission portal three representative scores and upload to the application their corresponding recordings; while MIDI recordings are accepted live recordings are preferred.
  • Upload to the admission portal a list of compositions with corresponding instrumentation, dates of first performances, and the performing ensemble(s).

Classical Composition

Audition Requirements for Undergraduate Degrees

  • Applicants should submit three compositions in score form with three corresponding mp3 recordings. MIDI is acceptable, live recordings are preferable.
  • All undergraduate applicants in music composition must successfully complete an audition in a performance studio (listed below) and an interview with the composition faculty. Admission to the composition studio is contingent on the prospective student's entrance into a performance studio.
