Voice Audition Requirements

All applicants will submit the following application materials based on their desired degree program. For specific audition requirements, please scroll down or use these buttons to navigate to the appropriate area.

Applicants to the Master of Music, Graduate Performance Certificate, and Doctor of Arts programs are encouraged to upload a pre-screen audition as part of their application. Pre-screen auditions will be evaluated prior to synchronous interviews. 

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • Complete the UNC Undergraduate Application
  • After submitting your application, upload and complete the following School of Music Checklist Items in your Bear App Portal
    • School of Music Supplementary Application, which includes
      • Virtual Interview Scheduling
      • Musical Experience
      • Contact information for 2 music recommenders
    • Statement of Goals - a brief statement about your career aspirations. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • Video Audition
      • PLEASE NOTE: all audition videos must be upload to the portfolio section of your portal at the same time. After saving your submission, you will no longer have access to the portfolio. If at any time you need to edit your portfolio contents, please email Music@unco.edu

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • Complete all Graduate School Application Requirements for your degree program and a UNC Application
    • Graduate Students will submit audition videos in the portfolio as part of the UNC Application.
  • After submitting your application, upload and complete the following School of Music Checklist Items in your Graduate School Admissions Portal:
    • Resume - a complete listing of your performing and work experience. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • Statement of Goals - a brief statement about your career aspirations. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • School of Music Form - includes Virtual Interview Scheduling, musical experience, and past teachers.
    • Assistantship Letter of Experience (optional but strongly recommended) - a brief statement about your teaching or professional experience as it relates to music. Please upload a .pdf document.
Additional Requirements for Doctor of Arts
  • Upload to the application portal a recent sample of scholarly writing.

Classical Voice

Audition Requirements for Undergraduate Degrees

  • Submit video recordings of two pieces from the classical repertoire sung from memory. Both selections may be in English, though having one song in a foreign language is preferred. Any repertoire from an Italian Art song anthology or The First Book of Soprano (or Mezzo, Tenor, Baritone, Bass) Solos series is acceptable. Contemporary Musical Theatre and Jazz repertoire is discouraged.
  • Sight-Singing and Melodic/Rhythmic Recall will be evaluated during the synchronous interview.

Audition Requirements for Master of Music and Graduate Performance Certificate

Optional Pre-Screen Audition Requirements
  • Three selections representing three languages and style periods.
For those applicants invited to schedule a synchronous interview:
  • Submit a recording of four pieces from the classical repertoire sung from memory. Selections should represent a variety of periods and styles, and at least three languages. Applicants may reuse recordings from their pre-screen audition.
    • At least one selection must be in English
    • At least one selection must be an aria from an opera or oratorio
    • At least two selections must be art songs
  • During the synchronous interview, prospective MM students will be asked to read a short excerpt in each of three languages: German, French, and Italian.

Audition Requirements for Doctor of Arts 

Optional Pre-Screen Audition Requirements
  • Three selections representing three languages and style periods.
For those applicants invited to schedule a synchronous interview:
  • Submit recordings of six pieces from the classical repertoire sung from memory. Selections should represent a variety of periods and styles, and at least four languages. Applicants may reuse recordings from their pre-screen audition.
    • At least one selection must be in English.
    • At least one selection must be an aria from an opera.
    • At least one selection must be from an oratorio.
    • At least three selections must be art songs.
    • At least one selection must have been written since 1950.
