Music Education Audition Requirements

All applicants will submit the following application materials based on their desired degree program.

Application Requirements for Undergraduate Applicants

Undergraduate music education applicants will audition for their primary instrument or voice studio and also attend an interview with the music education faculty. Use buttons below to navigate to the appropriate page for audition requirements.

Application Requirements for Graduate Degree Programs

  • Complete all Graduate School Application Requirements for your degree program and a UNC Application.
  • After submitting your application, upload and complete the following School of Music Checklist Items in your Graduate School Admissions Portal:
    • Resume - a complete listing of your performing and work experience. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • Statement of Goals - a brief statement about your career aspirations. Please upload a .pdf document.
    • School of Music Form - includes Virtual Interview Scheduling, musical experience, and past teachers.
    • Assistantship Letter of Experience (optional but strongly recommended) - a brief statement about your teaching or professional experience as it relates to music. Please upload a .pdf document.
Additional application requirements for Master of Music/Music Educators Intensive
  • Upload to the admissions portal a written teaching philosophy, which also serves as an example of your professional writing. 
  • Upload to the admissions portal one video of a teaching episode, 15 minutes of consecutive teaching (not an edited compilation). 
  • Attend a 20 minute interview with the Music Education faculty, which you will schedule using the PVA Audition Form in the admissions portal.
  • Based on the evaluation of application materials, an audition on primary instrument/voice may be requested. 
Additional application requirements for Doctor of Arts
    • Upload to the admissions portal a sample of your scholarly writing. 
    • Option 1: If you have writing that has been formally published (an article, a presentation with slides and/or handouts, etc), you are invited to submit that. 
    • Option 2: You may read the article provided here and respond to it. Your response should include summary and also critical analysis.  
    • Upload to the admissions portal one video of a teaching episode, 15 minutes of consecutive teaching (not an edited compilation). 
    • Based on the evaluation of application materials, an audition on primary instrument/voice may be requested.
